The Marann by Christie Meierz -- $2.99

What Do You Do When Everyone Knows Your Feelings -- Except You?

WINNER of the 2013 Prism Award for Futuristic Romance!

"A beautifully realized story that proves that politically driven space opera and tender love stories do not have to be mutually exclusive." Kirkus Reviews

"For anyone who enjoys tightly written, wonderfully imaginative Science Fiction wrapped with romance, this one is a must!" InDTale Magazine

A story that will appeal to fans of Marion Zimmer Bradley and Zenna Henderson, The Marann recounts one woman's experience on a world where everyone can read her emotions.

Marianne Woolsey is a high school Spanish teacher in rural Iowa, when Earth Central Command decides her linguistic talents would be better exercised if she spent 26 years teaching the daughter and heir of an alien ruler on a planet 24 light years from Earth. Now she's alone on a planet of aliens so humanlike that she has to keep telling herself her student's noble father is just her boss.

Handsome - and deadly - the Sural has ruled his province and led his planet far longer than he can admit to his daughter's human tutor. He hides much more from the space-faring races of the Trade Alliance than he is willing to reveal. What he doesn't want Central Command to know, he has to conceal from Marianne, but Marianne is concealing her own secrets from him - and as an empath, he knows it.

The Marann is a sweet romance. Might not be suitable for young teens.

Dragon Gate by Gary Jonas -- $4.99

A RITUALISTIC MURDER

Stephen Noble, a board member of Dragon Gate Industries (DGI), is decapitated. DGI, a front company for wizards, decides to provide executive protection services for Noble's son, Graham, and daughter, Rayna. But Graham doesn't trust wizards and refuses their protection, so DGI hires Jonathan Shade and his team to keep the Noble family safe.

GUILTY CLIENTS

The Nobles are from the other side of the Dragon Gate, and in that dimension, they committed crimes against the Marshall Clan. And now the Clan has come through the Gate to exact their revenge. While Graham and Rayna were too young to have been a part of the death and mayhem in the other land, honor dictates that they must pay for the crimes of their family.

INHUMAN ATTACKERS

How can Jonathan protect clients who are willing to kneel and accept death at any moment? How can he and his team handle thirteen deadly warriors willing to die to accomplish their goal? And how can Jonathan defeat the deadly creatures the Marshall Clan has brought with them to our world? Creatures that will destroy anything in their path as they seek their prey.

Indomitus Vivat: Book 2 of the Fovean Chronicles by Robert W. Brady Jr. -- $4.99

King Glennen of Eldador gave me a job to do - avenge his wife's death - and hey, you know me, I am to please! So maybe he didn't say, "Attack the invincible city, sack it and pretty much slap the faces of every important person on Fovea," but then again I never went to charm school. I kind of do what I do. But you know what I wish he had said? I wish he'd said, "Lupus, if you do plan to go sack the invincible city, you better make darn sure you have a way out of there, because the Uman-Chi are the most powerful Wizards on the planet, and every other nation is a friend to them." Yeah, that would have been pretty good advice."

These are the continuing adventures of Randy Morden, a man from our world thrust into another where magic is real and technology sounds pretty far-fetched. As the chosen of a god named 'War,' Randy has a mission to fulfill a destiny that he doesn't understand and, incidentally, to keep himself and his family alive while doing it.

In Indomitus Vivat, the stakes are raised as War drives Randy to greater stakes and greater consequences, and pathway that could lead to empire, or straight to hell!

Spellspam (World Weavers Book 2) by Alma Alexander -- $4.99

What do you get when ordinary e-mail spam becomes infused with magic? Spellspam—and it's not
supposed to exist. As far as Thea and her friends know, computers are meant to be inert vehicles for storing magic spells, not magical processors themselves. But all that seems to have changed as students at Wandless Academy find themselves the victim of practical jokes—with magical consequences—simply by opening an e-mail.

Now the spellspams are getting worse, and it's possible there's someone behind them who is not just bent on stirring up trouble but has a much scarier and more wide-reaching agenda. Until now, Thea has been the only person she's ever met who can reach through the computer using magic. But someone else is out there, and even her friends can't help her track down the source of the spellspam before it gets much, much worse.

This sequel to Worldweavers: Gift of the Unmage ups the ante on a fantasy world that is rich and nuanced, like our own, but with a core of wildly original magic.

Seaborn by S. A. Bolich. $4.99

Endless rain has raised the water level so high that even Neshuaas Riverborn has begun to fear the river she has sailed all her life, a river that has always obeyed her instinctive commands. When Melth in fury flings a devastating flash flood at the town of Southbridge, Nes finds herself not only separated from her ship, but swept away on a quest to discover the source of Melth's distress. For an untrained young woman who has scarcely set foot ashore in her life, travelling with an exotic company of talented strangers is less a source of wonder than of daily embarrassment as she runs up hard against all the things she doesn't know. How is she supposed to learn to hear-and tame-all the voices of fresh water with a Firedancer quietly pursuing her?

Alternately humiliated, angry, frightened, over-confident, and confused by her feelings for a man not of her clan, Nes struggles to bring her talent to bear on a mystery that could overwhelm her whole world. For if elemental Water herself has chosen to join her rebellious siblings Wind and Fire in attacking Earth Mother, where in Metrenna will there be anywhere left for mortals to stand? Tails of the Pack: A Werewolf Anthology edited by Stephen E. Wedel. $4.99

The legend of the man-beast has been with us forever. It has changed and evolved and reshaped itself much as the lycanthrope itself, and yet, at its heart, it is essentially the same. Unlike the vampire that has gone from a stinking, bloated, near-mindless corpse to a suave, angst-ridden sex toy as society shapes the trope to fit current mores, the werewolf has, for centuries, been about the loss of self-control.

In Tails of the Pack, Steven E. Wedel has put together eleven of the best Werewolf stories by authors such as Mark Finn, Tiffani Angus, Frog and Esther Jones, and Aaron Smith. Keep those silver bullets handy, you’re going to need them.

When Horses Fly…

I've been procrastinating about writing up what really happened on July 16. Part of it is I really don't recall the events of that day, at least not very clearly. I'm still dealing with the aftermath of that day and trying to make some sense of it.

My husband and I decided to go riding that day.  I rode my horse, Rocket, whom  I had been having trouble with. Rocket had been balking on me lately, insisting on turning around in spots we had turned around on before when we were training short distances. The veterinarian had checked out Rocket' s legs when we were treating her for in inflamed tendon. Her legs were fine; her problem was her feet and we had her shod. We were working toward increasing distance and had gone maybe two miles.

According to my husband, Rocket balked and pitched a fit. I turned her around and rode her down the hill a little ways with the intent of turning back up in a place that I thought was safe. When I did not return, my husband rode down to find me. As he put it, neither I nor my horse was in sight. He looked down the hill and saw me straddling some deadfall some 30 feet down the hill in a ravine. Rocket was a ways from me entangled with her reins.

I suspect Rocket tried to back up on me and then bolted, leaping into the ravine. She had bolted once before when I had first started riding her. She had gone uphill then, and I ended up getting thrown then too, this time only 10 feet or so down an embankment. I ended up in the road then. I was bruised up, but otherwise okay.  In this incident, I was anything but okay.  It was apparent that my arm was dislocated and I had sustained numerous injuries.

After the first bolting incident almost two years before, I trained her consistently and we managed to get her to the point that she could go for miles on unfamiliar trails. So, while I had some problems with her, I thought I had worked the bolting out of her.

Now, I was really hurt.  My husband got hold of some neighbors who were first responders and called 911. After all was said and done I ended up in the hospital. I had a dislocated elbow, a fractured neck vertebra, a severely bruised up left side, and a serious concussion. Supposedly, somebody mentioned a dislocated shoulder, but my husband claims that wasn't in the charts.

I remember nothing of the ride, or of the accident, or anything that followed, even though I was conscious throughout. My memories seem more like a jumbled-up dream. The fact that the hospital kept me five days even though they knew I didn't have insurance suggests just how serious injuries were. Even now, I'm fighting with pain, exhaustion, and short-term memory loss.

We've gotten some relief on the hospital bills, but we still have to pay individual doctors and medical services. If you feel so inclined, you can donate at my GoFundMe page.

Katalagein: A Collection of Cat F&SF short stories by Lyn McConcchie

The Many Worlds of Cats!

Welcome to Katalagein. I’ve been writing short stories now for 25 years and they’ve been published for 24 of those. I also write books, but that’s another tale entirely. I live with a cat, or rather, as he’d see it, he graciously permits me to live with him. As a result, and over the years, a number of my stories have featured cats, and some even featured cats that were real – although their adventures may have been exaggerated, but then again...

Cats think that humans exist to keep them warmed, fed, cuddled and loved. Humans exist to open doors, cat-food tins, and cartons large enough for a cat to curl up in. They exist to rescue the cat, defend the cat, and protect the cat. Our opinion, that cats exist to keep us company and catch mice, doesn’t begin to describe the relationship of the average cat with their human. Humans are stupid too, in the estimation of the same cat. No tail, no whiskers – no brains. Certainly our language abilities, compared to feline-speak are incredibly limited. We come in useful for some things but it can take so long to get the essential demand across, that I think that my current cat, Thunder, assumes I’m something of an idiot.

However, I've always enjoyed writing cat stories, some have even won awards, and using my imagination I've been able to explore cats and their elements in a way that has opened doors to worlds previously unknown to me – and not always as expected either. So follow me into the many worlds of cats, but watch out, because where ever cats go, trouble follows!
